Waskesiu Foundation - Enhancing the Waskesiu Experience
A registered charity supporting recreational, social, cultural and environmental activities that enhance the Waskesiu experience
Waskesiu is such a special place. It has a magical pull that makes you feel invigorated, joyful and fulfilled. Everything feels better at Waskesiu. The air is fresh and filled with the scent of pine. The trees reach toward the clear blue sky and bright warmth of the sun. The water beckons. Filled with the sights and sounds of kids at play and neighbours visiting, you can't help but smile. Whether you love to explore the outdoors with a cookout at Birch Bay, jump in the boat for a ride on the lake, experience the forest trails, grab a round of relaxing golf, hear the excited cheers on the tennis court, swap stories of shack tents from long ago or quietly reflect on a bench overlooking the lake, it's all just picture perfect paradise.
You have the power to share this experience with future generations and make a tremendous impact on the Waskesiu community you love by leaving a gift to the Waskesiu Foundation in your will. Leaving even a small portion of your estate to us could result in a bigger contribution than you ever thought possible, while still supporting those you love. You have the power to make a difference through your will. Activate your Will Power or calculate your potential gift today for a tomorrow that has yet to be imagined.

Each and every single day we work with donor dollars and community partners to support recreational, social, cultural and environmental activities that enhance the Waskesiu experience. We don't know which project is needed most in 5 years, 10 years, or 30 years in the future, but your help means we can plan today to improve Waskesiu's tomorrow.
Waskesiu Legacy is our community-wide planned giving program. A planned gift is a donation that is arranged now to be fulfilled beyond your lifetime that will benefit the Waskesiu community you love.
A gift in your will is the most popular way for you to leave your legacy and have a big impact on Waskesiu in the future. Other planned giving options are available too such as gifting securities, life insurance policies, RRSPs or RRIFs.
Waskesiu Legacy is community-wide which means you’re able to support the part of the community that brings a smile to your face, evokes your favourite memory, or speaks to your heart.
Here's how it works:
Can I name a specific project in my will?
Please don't! Projects may have already been completed in your lifetime or may not meet our charitable objects and purposes which means we won't be able to fulfill your Waskesiu legacy. Keep it simple! List the Waskesiu Foundation as your beneficiary. You may choose to add a sub-use area (see section How It Works above).
Why do I need to direct my planned gift to the Waskesiu Foundation if I'd like to support the Waskesiu Heritage Museum (or another organization)?
As a registered Canadian charity, we issue a charitable donation receipt for tax purposes at the time that the gift is received. A charitable donation receipt cannot be issued if the gift is left to a partner organization, like the Waskesiu Heritage Museum.
How will my planned gift be used?
Funds will be held by us until such time as a specific project is identified. The project must meet our charitable objects and, if they are intended to benefit a partnering organization, the needs of the partnering organization. An eligible project may include funds for capital projects, cultural events or activities, or environmental improvements for example, but not to fund operating expenses of a partnering organization.
Can I be recognized now for a planned gift?
Absolutely! We are interested in knowing if you intend to make a planned gift, but the amount of your donation does not need to be shared. Please advise us of your planned gift for our confidential records and – if you agree - we can honour your name now on the donor kiosk. By doing this, you will help us encourage others to do the same.
What are the next steps?
For more information, contact us or a member of our Waskesiu Legacy committee (Don Ravis, Rita Mirwald, or Diane Phillips) in confidence. We understand that each individual’s financial circumstances are unique. You are advised to consult with a qualified professional advisor.
Direct your executor to pay or transfer publicly traded securities, exchange traded funds (ETFs), bonds or mutual funds to the Waskesiu Foundation.
Doing so can save your estate paying taxes. Capital gains on securities donated directly to a charity are not taxable and the donor's estate receives a charitable tax receipt for the full value of the securities. If securities are sold and the sale proceeds are donated to the charity, capital gains associated with the sale are taxable.
When a person dies without instructions to transfer securities directly to a charity, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) considers that the person has disposed of all capital property right before death. The CRA calls this a deemed disposition. The CRA considers that the person has received the deemed proceeds of disposition and the deemed proceeds are subject to capital gains tax.
The information provided is general in nature and is not intended to represent tax or legal advice. We understand that each individual’s financial circumstances are unique and you are advised to consult with a qualified professional advisor.
A bequest in your will is the most popular planned giving method, but there are other options available too! Choose what best fits your intentions and circumstances.
Will Power is a national movement, made up of charities, financial advisors and legal professionals across the country, working together to show Canadians that they have the power to make a difference through their will. At the Waskesiu Foundation, we're proud to be a Will Power charity partner.
Name the Waskesiu Foundation as the beneficiary of your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or your Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF)
It is not necessary to designate the Foundation in your will. Just sign a declaration with your financial institution naming the Foundation as the beneficiary of all or a percentage of your plan or fund.
Your estate will receive a charitable donation receipt for the fair market value, reducing the taxes payable upon your death.
Gift an existing, paid up life insurance policy
Benefit from a tax credit in your life time by receiving a charitable tax receipt for the cash surrender value.
Gift a new life insurance policy
Name the Waskesiu Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of the policy. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the annual premiums.
