Waskesiu Foundation - Enhancing the Waskesiu Experience
A registered charity supporting recreational, social, cultural and environmental activities that enhance the Waskesiu experience
Shuffleboard tiles will be green and red and specifically engineered for shuffleboard like those pictured
4 adjustable basketball hoops and lines for volleyball, floor hockey and futsal will be featured on the new sport court while a full size shuffleboard will be located on a separate space
Construction of the new sport court and shuffleboard has begun! This project wouldn't be possible without the generous support of project partners and amazing donors like you. Thanks to you, all ages and fitness levels will be invited to share a recreational adventure in the great outdoors. Activities like basketball, volleyball, soccer, floor hockey, dodgeball and shuffleboard will be enjoyed by multiple generations in the fresh Waskesiu air. We can hardly wait!
Thank you to all supporters! Teamwork makes the dream work. Here are the latest details on this exciting addition to the Waskesiu community.
Topsoil has been excavated prepping the area for a gravel base and swale construction. Once that's ready, a concrete pad will be poured which we expect to be completed before the end of August. A chain link perimeter fence will be installed next, followed by basketball hoops and sport court floor tiles.
The new sport court and shuffleboard will be located between the Recreation Building and tennis courts 5 & 6, near the mini golf end of the recreation area. Originally planned for the lawn bowling area, a change in location was required due to unsuitable soil conditions that may have prevented the gravel base to be adequately packed for the sport court surface.
Tiles, adjustable basketball hoops and nets have all been ordered and should arrive around September 1. A heavy duty outdoor table tennis unit has been ordered too and will be installed this fall on a resurfaced asphalt pad between the Recreation Building and the new picnic shelter. Shuffleboard will be a full sized court on a separate pad with specifically engineered shuffleboard tiles and benches on either end.
Construction of the sport court is part of a multi-year Waskesiu Recreation Area Renewal project. Recreation facilities are one of the cornerstones of the Waskesiu experience. The Waskesiu Foundation, the Waskesiu Recreation Association, Parks Canada Agency and the Waskesiu Community Council, are all working collaboratively to revitalize Waskesiu’s recreation facilities. Upcoming aspects of the Recreation Area Renewal project include:
Our project partners at the Waskesiu Recreation Association plan to add an outdoor foosball table and children's ninja line to the recreation grounds in 2021. Lots of work has already been completed on the Recreation Area Renewal project and there's more to come! When visiting the site for tennis, pickle ball or mini golf this summer, be sure to follow the signs to access the space safely during construction.
On a chilly July day in Waskesiu, we saw tons of kids, families, and visitors looking for the perfect activity to do together. It’s challenging on non-beach days to keep restless kids busy outside so they can burn off some energy. Luckily, a new mini golf course near the corner of Montreal Drive provides an amazing opportunity for families to play together outside, and it’s donors like you who made that happen. But there was still a big piece of Waskesiu's recreation puzzle to be completed.
We partnered with the Waskesiu Recreation Association to welcome the next big thing: the multi-use sport court. Playing in the fresh air surround by trees and nature just breathes summer. We're excited to watch it all come together!
Thanks to donors like you and a matching gift from Parks Canada, the sport court is fully funded. Gifts of $100 and up will be recognized on a donor recognition sign on the recreation property. Donors who made or pledged gifts of $1,000 or more for the sport court by September 15, 2019 received a $75 gift certificate from the Waskesiu Recreation Association to be used in 2020 for mini golf, tennis, or pickle ball.
Gifts are still gratefully accepted for the Recreation Area Renewal. Gifts of $25 and up are eligible for a tax receipt while gifts totalling $100 and up and will be recognized on the Waskesiu Foundation kiosk by the main beach. All gifts are cumulative, which means gifts made over a number of years can move you from one level to another on the donor kiosk. Donate online by selecting the 'Sport Court/Recreation Renewal' fund or mail your cheque payable to the Waskesiu Foundation to PO Box 242, Saskatoon, SK S7K 3K4.
