Over 100 people came to hear best-selling author Murray Howe discussing life lessons learned from his legendary father Gordie Howe - "Mr. Hockey" - and Gordie's passion for Waskesiu. Gordie Howe lived, worked, golfed and fished at Waskesiu during his hockey career and said Waskesiu was his favourite place on earth.
Not only did Gordie Howe work and play at the Waskesiu Golf Course, he won the Lobstick trophy in 1954 and he has his name on six trophies and plaques in the clubhouse. On two other occasions, he drove the green on the par 4 first hole.
Nearly 200 personally autographed copies of Nine Lessons I Learned from my Father were purchased by the conclusion of the day.
Bilingual signage was unveiled to officially commemorate the fitness park in honour of Gordie Howe. MoveStrong, the equipment manufacturer, was the lead sponsor. A group of volunteers in MoveStrong T-shirts lead by Angie Carriere had fun demonstrating the fitness park for those watching.
